Dorsoduro: History and Origins
A district between land and water
Dorsoduro occupies the southern part of Venice. Its area includes several island clusters around San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, Angelo Raffaele, San Trovaso, San Basilio and Sant’Agnese.
The origin of the name
Traditionally, the name Dorsoduro is linked to the shape of the land: a higher, firmer ridge compared with the surrounding marshland, making it a suitable place for homes and workshops.
The historical account also mentions other theories: that the name derives from the Dosduri family, who are said to have come from Padua, or that it refers to a fortified tower. These explanations were passed down by different authors and should be distinguished from a definitively established origin.
The development of the neighbourhood
Like other parts of Venice, Dorsoduro developed as separate settlements gradually grew and became connected. The historical accounts cited in the source link this development to Venetian families and to the settlement of men serving the Doge.
These accounts describe a neighbourhood shaped over time by the relationship between land, water and urban life.
