Experience Dorsoduro
Between Campo San Barnaba and Campo Santa Margherita, Dorsoduro invites you to explore Venice on foot, among its narrow streets, shops, museums, and bacari.
Near the church of San Barnaba, you’ll find the Ponte dei Pugni, associated with the historic rivalries between the Nicolotti and Castellani. From here, you can continue to the Ponte dell’Accademia and Piazza San Marco.
Campo Santa Margherita, about a five-minute walk from the apartment, is one of the liveliest spots in the neighborhood: a great place to stop for a coffee, an aperitif or dinner.
Towards the Giudecca Canal, you can discover the squeri, traditional boatyards where gondolas are built and repaired, and stop at a bacaro along the waterfront.
A home with a Venetian story
Ea casa de mì preserves traces of Venice’s craft heritage: it once housed a stonemason’s workshop. The name Sotoportego del Tagiapiera recalls the stonecutters who worked with Istrian stone.
Inside, the exposed wooden beams still bear the marks used to identify the timber as it was transported by river to the lagoon. In the bedroom, the wooden panelling of a former staircase to the upper floor is still visible.
The two small courtyards also reveal how the building has changed over time, with Istrian stone window frames, brick walls and traces of former openings that were later bricked up.
These features, described in the architect’s notes, connect the home to the history of the neighbourhood.
History and Architecture
The home and its neighbourhood: history and architecture
Adapted from the historical and cultural notes of architect Carlo Battain
A historic neighbourhood
The apartment is in one of the oldest parts of Dorsoduro, along the routes linking the Grand Canal to the Mendicoli area. Venice developed gradually as separate settlements grew and became connected by paths and waterways.
Calle Lunga San Barnaba, between Rio di San Barnaba and Rio di Malpaga, forms part of this historic area. The names of the nearby covered passageway (sotoportego) and small square (campiello) recall a stonemason’s workshop.
Traces of history inside the home
The building shows signs of successive alterations: materials from different periods, added sections and changes to the layout.
The exposed beams still bear the marks used to identify the timber as it was transported by river to the lagoon. In the bedroom, you can see wooden panelling from a staircase leading to the upper floor.
The courtyards feature Istrian stone window surrounds, brickwork and traces of openings that have been bricked up over time.
San Barnaba and the Ponte dei Pugni
The church gives its name to the square, street and canal of San Barnaba. The notes recall its ancient origins and its 18th-century renovation by architect Lorenzo Boschetti.
At the corners of the nearby Ponte dei Pugni, footprints set in Istrian stone recall the historic rivalries between the Castellani and Nicolotti. Crossing the bridge takes you to Campo Santa Margherita, one of the neighbourhood’s main hubs of everyday life.
Walks through art and architecture
From the apartment, you can reach Ca’ Rezzonico and the Gallerie dell’Accademia. The neighborhood also offers routes to the Church of San Sebastiano, associated with the work of Paolo Veronese, Palazzo Zenobio, the Carmini, and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini.
Toward the Punta della Salute, the route continues past the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Punta della Dogana and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.
A stroll along the Zattere
The south-facing Zattere promenade runs along the Giudecca Canal, offering views across the water and plenty of places to stop for something to eat or drink.
Staying at Ea casa de mì makes it easy to combine Venice’s best-known sights with a glimpse of everyday life in its narrow streets, canal-side walkways and squares.
